Subtalar Arthrodesis
Subtalar Arthrodesis Surgery in Hawaii
Subtalar arthrodesis is a surgical procedure used to treat isolated arthritis, instability, or deformity of the subtalar joint, which sits beneath the ankle and allows side-to-side motion of the foot.
The procedure is commonly performed for post-traumatic arthritis, hindfoot instability, inflammatory arthritis, or deformity that is limited to the subtalar joint.
How Surgery Is Performed
Subtalar arthrodesis involves removing damaged cartilage from the subtalar joint and positioning the heel bone and talus in optimal alignment. The joint is stabilized using screws or other fixation devices to allow the bones to fuse together.
The procedure may be performed alone or combined with additional procedures to address alignment or tendon imbalance.
Goals of surgery include:
Eliminating pain from subtalar joint arthritis
Restoring hindfoot stability
Improving walking tolerance on uneven ground
Preventing progression of deformity
Recovery After Surgery
Recovery after subtalar arthrodesis focuses on achieving solid fusion while preserving overall foot function.
Typical recovery progression includes:
Period of immobilization with non–weight bearing
Gradual progression to protected and then full weight bearing as fusion heals
Physical therapy focused on strength, balance, and gait mechanics
Transition to supportive footwear or orthotics
Recovery typically takes several months. While subtalar motion is eliminated, many patients tolerate this well with improved pain and stability.
Risks and Considerations
Risks include nonunion, infection, hardware irritation, stiffness, nerve injury, and increased stress on adjacent joints. Proper alignment and postoperative compliance are key factors in achieving successful outcomes.
