Hindfoot Arthrodesis Surgery in Hawaii
Hindfoot arthrodesis is a surgical procedure used to treat painful arthritis, deformity, or instability involving the hindfoot joints, most commonly the subtalar, talonavicular, and calcaneocuboid joints. These joints play a key role in side-to-side motion and stability of the foot.
Surgery is considered when pain persists despite non-surgical treatment or when deformity and instability limit function.
How Surgery Is Performed
Hindfoot arthrodesis involves removing damaged cartilage from the affected joints and positioning the bones in optimal alignment. The joints are then stabilized using screws, plates, or other fixation devices to allow the bones to fuse together.
Goals of surgery include:
Eliminating pain from arthritic or unstable joints
Restoring a stable, plantigrade foot
Improving walking tolerance and balance
Preventing progression of deformity
Recovery After Surgery
Recovery focuses on achieving solid fusion while gradually restoring strength and function.
Typical recovery progression includes:
Initial immobilization with strict non–weight bearing
Gradual progression to protected and then full weight bearing once fusion progresses
Physical therapy focused on strength, balance, and gait adaptation
Transition to supportive footwear or bracing as needed
Full recovery may take several months, and some loss of hindfoot motion is expected.
Risks and Considerations
Risks include nonunion, infection, wound complications, nerve irritation, hardware discomfort, and stress on adjacent joints. Careful alignment and postoperative compliance are essential for success.
