Bunionectomy Surgery in Hawaii

(MIS Osteotomy, Metatarsal Osteotomy, and Lapiplasty)

A bunionectomy refers to surgical correction of a bunion (hallux valgus), a deformity in which the big toe drifts toward the smaller toes, creating a painful prominence along the inside of the foot. Surgery is considered when pain persists despite non-surgical treatment.

Multiple surgical techniques may be used depending on deformity severity, anatomy, and patient goals, including minimally invasive osteotomy, traditional metatarsal osteotomy, or Lapiplasty.

How Surgery Is Performed

Bunion correction involves realigning the bones of the forefoot to restore normal anatomy and relieve pressure. Techniques may include:

  • Minimally invasive (MIS) osteotomy using small incisions to realign the metatarsal

  • Metatarsal osteotomy with fixation to correct angular deformity

Lapiplasty, which corrects the deformity at its source by stabilizing the first tarsometatarsal joint

Goals of surgery include:

  • Correcting the underlying bony deformity

  • Relieving pain and shoe irritation

  • Restoring proper alignment of the big toe

  • Reducing the risk of recurrence

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery depends on the specific technique performed and the extent of correction.

Typical recovery progression includes:

  • Use of a protective postoperative shoe or boot

  • Gradual progression from protected to full weight bearing

  • Physical therapy focused on swelling control, toe mobility, and gait mechanics

  • Transition back to regular footwear over several weeks to months

Most patients return to normal daily activities within weeks, with continued improvement over time.

Risks and Considerations

Risks may include infection, stiffness, recurrence of deformity, hardware irritation, delayed bone healing, or continued discomfort. Procedure selection is individualized to optimize alignment and long-term outcomes.
